HERstory at The History Theatre

HERstory at History Theatre

Pete Simmons and I are delighted to announce that we will be joining the second half of The History Theatre's season: HERstory!

On Mother's Day weekend we will be remounting the one-woman show that Pete wrote and I performed at the 2016 MN Fringe Festival.

This is based on the true story of my appearing on The Sally Jessy Raphael Show with my mother. But more importantly, it is a look into the complex relationships between mothers and daughters. It is dedicated to the memory of my wonderful mother who deserved so much more time on this earth to drive me batty and love me fiercely.

We are thrilled to join the ranks of people taking to the stage to tell the stories of all different kinds of women and what they bring to the world- be it on a global scale or in your own living room.

If you missed it before, you have THREE CHANCES to see it in May, 2019. Mark your calendars. Come and join me as I tell HERstory.

Live from New York! He's a Prom Date!

Saturday, May 11, 2pm; Sunday, May 12 and Monday, May 13, 7:30pm | History Theatre

Written and directed by Peter Simmons

Jen Maren (Glensheen) was a junior in 1992 at Red Wing High School, and a budding actress fresh off her triumphant performance as Maria in The Sound Of Music. One spring day, after school, her mother, Margo, ambushed her with the news that Jenny was wanted in New York. A huge opportunity in the Big Apple! Sally Jessy Rafael wanted to fly the two of them to New York to appear as a girl who couldn’t get a date to prom, and her angry mother.

No date to prom. NATIONAL TV! And off they went.

This was the bus of humiliation under which Margo was delighted to toss her first born. It’s a story Jen’s been telling and retelling over the years - in dressing rooms, at parties, in bars - about the lure of unearned fame, the sting of public embarrassment, and a lifelong investigation of the nature of the love she felt for the preposterous human being she was blessed to call mom.

And yes. We have the tape!

Margo, Jen, SJR
